FCPS Elementary Schools Implement Innovative New Reading Programs

One of the three broad goals of Fayette County Public Schools is to increase reading proficiency by 21% by 2021. In order to make this a reality, the district is looking for innovative new ways to teach students and raise reading proficiency beginning in the lower grades. Partnering with TNTP and utilizing funds from the Gates Foundation grant, FCPS is piloting programs in grades K- 2 in all four elementary schools to boost scores across the curriculum.

In an effort to expose students to monumental historical movements and artifacts, 3rd grade educators from Buckley-Carpenter Elementary accompanied their scholars through a tour of The National Civil Rights Museum.

During the week of July 17-July 21, several mid-south churches will band together to serve on mission in Fayette County, focusing first on the Fayette County Public Schools, followed by neighborhoods, communities, and families immediately surrounding the schools.

FWCHS Cafeteria Gets a New Look

For almost a year, a new design has been in the works for the cafeteria at Fayette-Ware Comprehensive High School. A more relaxed, college feel incorporating smaller group seating can now be found instead of the traditional extended cafeteria tables.

Students from East Junior High, West Junior High, and Fayette-Ware High School were treated to a well- deserved trip to Incredible Pizza as a reward for all their academic accomplishments for the second nine weeks.

Fayette-Ware Comprehensive High School Honors ACT Exemplars

In an effort to promote Fayette County Public School’s Imagine 21 initiative, Dr. Watkins, Chancellor of Fayette-Ware Comprehensive High School, instituted the 21+ Club which recognized all students who made a 21 or higher on the ACT. There were 20 students thus recognized at Fayette-Ware High School’s first induction ceremony.

As a culminating experience to the literacy unit on fairy tales and fantasy, LMES Pre K students embraced the roles of kings, queens, princes, princesses, and knights during a day filled with activities fit only for Tiger Nation royalty.

FCPS and ARISE2Read Unite to Host Second Training

ARISE2Read is a commitment to working with schools in order to help boost reading proficiency of second grade students. FCPS and ARISE2Read recently joined together to host a second semester training class in which volunteers from churches, the community, and local businesses came together to support additional reading assistance for second grade students. Volunteer training on how to become an A2R coach was provided by Mrs. Ellen Ellis, Director of Development for A2R.

FCPS Cosmetology Class a Cut Above

Students at Fayette-Ware College and Career Technical Education Academy know they are learning skills that are in demand when they enroll in one of Ms. Sharone Gray’s cosmetology classes. The three levels of courses taught become increasingly more complex and hands-on, with class sizes becoming smaller as levels progress.
